Plaza Mayor Malaga: A fabulous place to shop and have family fun

With everyone now supposedly switching to online shopping, there’s been quite a bit of talk lately about the looming “demise of the Mall.”

Well, that may be true in some places, but here on the Mediterranean sunny coast of the Costa del Sol the Spanish version of the mall – known as ‘centro comercial’– appears to be doing just fine.

If you’re wondering why, a visit to Plaza Mayor, a fabulous open-air shopping center, will be a good place to start your experience with Malaga shopping. It is also one a prime destination during the highly popular Black Friday period of sales promotions.

Much more than just shopping

With the mountains visible in the distance, this sprawling mall is laid out as a stylish European downtown, where a cozy café, a restaurant, a bar, or an ice cream parlor, is always just a short walk down the street.

Speaking of pastimes, Plaza Mayor Malaga is a highly popular place for family outings, where children can always find fun things to do, and their parents don’t have to stress out about the kids’ safety. And, just in case, there’s a movie theater close by.

Great choices for all budgets

Oh, yes, of course — it’s also great for shopping! Do you feel like checking out some luxury brands? – Head to the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet center, which features a variety of stores by the likes of Armani, Prada, Hugo Boss, Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger, and Polo Ralph Lauren, among others.

With over 300 stores, however, there’s not problem finding a store to one’s liking or budget, including by such well-known Spanish clothing brands as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Mango and Desigual. Also, if you need to catch up on your grocery shopping, no problem – Mercadona, the popular Spanish supermarket chain, is right there.

One other important thing that’s worth mentioning: Plaza Mayor Malaga is super easy to get to. Located on the western side of Malaga, it’s within a short and comfortable train ride from the two neighboring towns along the shore — Torremolinos and Benalmadena. The train station is right there, near the mall entrance. And since it sits between two highways, getting there by car is no less convenient. The mall boasts a huge underground parking area, as well as ample roof parking.
