Visiting Portugal’s Algarve coast

A convenient location that makes traveling easy, experts say, goes a long way toward making a town a great place to live.

At the southernmost tip of Portugal lies the Algarve coast, which is famous for its amazing shoreline and beautiful beaches.

Among its star attractions is the coastal area of towering cliffs, hidden bays, coves and bird-filled lagoons.

It has taken nature millions of years, but the result is Algarve’s spectacular coastline of multicolored cliffs. Waves and weather have eroded the limestone, which glistens in the sun in varied shades of terracotta and caramel.

The Algarve coast is also famous for its age-old history, as well as great golf courses and surfing spots.

Importantly, if you’ve settled around Benalmadena, Spain, this highly popular landmark in southern Portugal is an easy and scenic 300-mile drive away. For comparison purposes, it may be a bit longer than the distance between New York and Washington D.C., but the roads are not as congested.

The fastest route leads through the historic city of Seville, which can serve as an amazing stopover point.

No doubt, the capital of Andalucia, with the amazing richness of its historical and cultural landmarks, deserves a separate trip. Again, if you’re based around Benalmadena area — it’s an easy undertaking: by car, it will take you about 2 hours 30 minutes to get there.

After Seville, you will be passing by Huelva, a port city in southwestern Spain at the mouth of the Odiel and Tinto rivers. If you are interested in archeology, the Huelva Museum hosts an extensive collection. One of its landmarks, the La Merced Cathedral, features an impressive baroque facade.

Among more modern attractions, a towering statue of Cristopher Columbus overlooks the sea from a scenic plaza.
