…For US travelers it has now become much easier — and faster — to reach the white beaches, scenic wonders and cultural landmarks of Spain’s Costa del Sol, especially if you’re flying from Greater New York area.

Direct flights to Spain from the United States now have an important addition. On June 1, 2023, United Airlines inaugurated a new route from Newark International Airport to Malaga that will operate three direct flights a week through the end of September. Reports said there was not a vacant seat to be found on the first flight. Expectations are high that the route will prove to be a big hit after a four-year hiatus exacerbated by COVID.  The nonstop flight from Newark to Malaga takes about 7 hours and 10 minutes; the return flight is closer to 8 hours.

A projected 17,000 passengers will make use of the route. This increase in the number of visitors from the US to Malaga, one Andalusia’s key provinces, comes against the backdrop of a spike in air travel from other major countries. The government of Andalusia expects that “increases in air seats will be experienced in all the main markets of Andalusia,” including a boost of over 30% from Germany and Italy, close to 28% from Sweden and Switzerland, and around 23% from Ireland and the Netherlands.

According to experts, the New York to Malaga non-stop route will be an important addition to the range of choices available to travelers when exploring direct flights to Spain from the United States.

According to United Airlines, the route is serviced by the Boeing 757-200 aircraft and will enable travelers “to explore Spain’s Mediterranean Coast,”
